Giving back to the Community

Unpaid Work

Community PaybackCommunity Payback enables Hampshire and the Isle of Wight to benefit from around 250,000 hours of free labour each year. This equates to approximately £1,500,000 of free labour provided to local communities as offenders pay back for the crimes they have committed.

Community Payback covers a huge range of work such as cutting back undergrowth on public footpaths and graffiti removal; painting and decorating church halls and community centres; groundwork and maintenance for schools and charitable organisations.

Offenders usually work as part of a team, monitored by a supervisor, and will work all day with short breaks. There are some opportunities for individual placements with organisations.

How to get involved

Members of the public and local communities are encouraged to suggest projects which offenders can undertake.

To be considered a project must meet the following critera

The Community Payback team will assess the project for suitability and for health and safety implications. Anyone can nominate a project so, if you are an individual member of the public, community group, faith group or voluntary organisation and have a project that fits the criteria above, please complete our nomination form or call the Community Payback hotline: 02392 728400.

Benefiting the communityWe will confirm receipt of your suggested project within 2 days.

A member of the Community Payback team will contact you within 10 working days to discuss the project in detail and as appropriate arrange to visit and assess the project.

If Community Payback can help with your project we will advise you of how long the work will take and agree dates on which to commence the project. Once the work has been completed and if appropriate, a plaque will be displayed with the Community Payback logo to indicate where offenders have positively contributed to improving a neighbourhood.
