Why the Probation Service?

You could be part of a professional team that:
· makes a real difference to people’s lives
· provides worthwhile protection to our communities.

The National Probation Service exists to reduce re-offending through the rehabilitation of offenders. It makes sure, of course, that offenders have been appropriately dealt with by their punishment. But every offender is treated as an individual. It is critical that each becomes aware of the effects on victims and the public. The work of Probation staff turns around lives that other people would have thought hopeless.

Now is an exciting time to be joining the Probation Service, which is becoming part of a larger family under the National Offender Management Service. As part of NOMS, you will work with others including prison staff, the police, health and education professionals.

Probation work is both challenging and fulfilling. It requires the highest levels of integrity and empathy with people. A range of employment/career opportunities exists, for example, from Offender Management Administrators to Probation Service Officers, from staff involved in Victim Contact to those working in Approved Premises - and many more. All require a keen interest in protecting the public through working to reduce offending.
