Equality Impact Assessments are a way of ensuring that the policies and procedures of Hampshire Probation Trust do not unintentionally disadvantage or exclude any groups from full participation or benefit, particularly in relation to a person's race & ethnicity, gender, disability, religion or belief, age or sexuality.
In order to undertake an impact assessment a policy or set of procedures are looked at in detail, evidence gathered to see if any one group fares worse than another and consultation undertaken to hear the views of people from different social groups. If adverse impact is identified then decisions have to be taken as to how to rectify this and monitoring then put in place to ensure effectiveness.
Equality Impact Assessments were originally done only in relation to race equality. As legislation and good practice has developed the process has expanded to include all different aspects of equality. Some of the assessments on the site will have addressed all equalities areas, other earlier assessments will have so far focused on race and will be reviewed to extend the assessment into other equality areas.
