Recognising differences between us

Hampshire Probation Trust is committed to building a fairer and more inclusive society.  In all our work we strive to demonstrate that there is equality of opportunity for staff working within the organisation and for people using its services.

The value of diversityWe value and will achieve diversity throughout our Service and ensure its integration into every aspect of its leadership, structures and practices. All people coming into contact with this Service can expect to be treated with equality and fairness.  We recognise and value diversity, we will ensure that our workforce is representative and our Services are suitable for people from different Minority Ethnic Groups, religions, gender, ages, differing physical and mental ability and sexuality.

Julia Bahaj, Diversity Adviser for the Hampshire Probation Area says:

"We take diversity and equality very seriously in Hampshire Probation – we have to because if we didn’t we would not be effective either as an employer or in our work with offenders and victims.

What chair? When we talk about diversity we are simply referring to all those differences that “make a difference”.  Whether it be our gender, age, religion, cultural background, the language we speak, ethnicity, our physical or mental abilities, sexuality and so forth, there are many facets to being an individual, which fundamentally define who we are.  How others treat us and how we experience our lives is governed by the differences that exist in us, the same differences that need to be recognised, understood and taken into consideration in our work.  We need to understand people’s worlds so that we can communicate and engage with them.

The Probation Service recognises and responds to diversity with a clear commitment and policy of ensuring equality of achievement of our aims.  We do not see everybody as the same, but we do believe that everybody should have the opportunity to achieve the same outcomes.  Equality of opportunity and achievement of potential is what we aim for by recognising and responding appropriately to differences.

On our website you will find the schemes of work through which we aim to achieve these principles, as well as the key equality strategies and measures of success."
